History Meets Elegance Meets Peacocks

Writer's picture: Jennifer WakemanJennifer Wakeman

When picking out a place to stay, I consider three things: Is it unique? Are there peacocks? Is it super-duper old? Well, was I in for perfection when I was searching for a place to stay after making a trek to Spokane for a 5 hour test (On that note...when you're in a testing room with other people please do not grunt and sigh every 30 seconds. Sorry you weren't prepared, Lilian, but it's really hard to figure out the square root of 678 divided by 92.5 without a calculator while you're huffing and puffing over there). The Historic Davenport Hotel is over 100 years old, which lends to a rich, unique history, and has a bar just full of peacocks.

I've wanted to stay here since I first visited Spokane. It is such a large presence in downtown Spokane and it's hard not to fall in love with. My grandma told me you can go in to the hotel and take a look around, even if you're not staying there. *PEARL CLUTCH* What??!! "Isn't that stealing??" "...How is that stealing? I didn't say to steal anything? You can just...go inside and take a look? There's a whole historic walking tour throughout their lobby..." Well, 20 year old me had a lot to learn about the world and the fact that apparently going into hotel lobbies you're not staying in isn't a crime against humanity. After my

first walk through the lobby, I knew I'd have to stay there! There's a fountain filled with fish right in the middle of the lobby...FISH! I was just as surprised as this little guy.

While the lobby is seriously the most stunning I've ever seen, the rooms are just as royal. We booked the Parlor Suite because we were feeling extra fancy. It also has a bathtub and if you know anything about me, (which you do...because just my mom reads this), you know that baths are MY JAM! Bad day? Bath. Good day? Bath. Minor inconvenience? Bath. The Parlor Suite also has a wet bar. For those that don't know, it's a bar area with a sink. I, for one, did not know and that was NOT what I pictured. But, I loved it! The bedroom is beautiful with the signature Historic Davenport headboard and a corner TV. Their beds are REALLY comfy. Did you know you can also purchase their beds?? I'm sure they're new and not used ones...but it's what I picture and it makes me laugh every time I see the sign. Again, just so I don't get sued by the Davenport, they are NEW BEDS.

Now to the Peacock Room Lounge! It is over the top and amazing! The stained-glass ceiling that greets you as you enter is made up of 5,000 glass pieces!! It's seriously gorgeous!! Also, it lets me know I'm about ready to have a Peanut Brittle Martini (As I look it up right now it's on the "after dinner drinks" list...are we not supposed to down these at 4 PM before dinner? Whoops.). If you've never had one of these, you are seriously missing out. But apparently, as a dessert after dinner like a normal adult. Whatever.

If you have the chance to stay at the Historic Davenport, DO IT! You will be transported back in time and feel like you're super rich even though you just live in Eastern Washington. You won't regret it!
